Well
I have to admit that I'm experiencing some feelings of apprehension. This
Wednesday the 30th is the tentative departure date. Everything that I planned
to get tended to has been done, from equipping the bike to shipping replacement
tires to Alaska to getting all the paper work in order. What is going to be
packed has been worked out and how to pack it on the bike is settled. I did a
dress rehearsal several weeks ago from AL to TN, NC, GA to FL and back to
Fairhope, AL. I was able to work out
some packing wrinkles along with getting some experience on gravel roads while
the bike was fully loaded. On this trip there will be between one and two
thousand miles done on unpaved roads. Did you know that less that 5% of the
world’s roads are paved? Well, if you are going to see much of this old world
while you are here then you'll have to go where the rubber meets the road....so
to speak.
The
hard part will be breaking with my comfortable life here in Fairhope and
experiencing living one day at a time without the illusion of having control of
much of anything. The most important lesson learned from the "Appalachian
Adventure" last fall was that the less I tried to control what happened
the more exciting the adventure was.....the plan is to suit up, show up, and
see what life has in store. It will be a blast and I'm going to see some
awesome country and meet some very interesting people.
